You Are My Sunshine

You are my sunshine
My only sunshine
You make me happy
When skies are grey
You'll never know, dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

The other night, dear
As I lay sleeping
I dreamt I held you
In my arms.
When I awoke, dear,
I was mistaken,
So I hung my head
And I cried.

Midi: Barefoot's Midi Jamboree

First recorded about 1940, the song is associated with former Louisiana governor, Jimmie Davis. Davis and Charles Mitchell are the credited songwriters. According to many sources, Davis bought the song and rights from Paul Rice and put his own name on it, a practice not uncommon in the pre-World War II music business. Some early versions of the song do credit the Rice Brothers. Davis played up his association with the song when running for governor, singing it at all his campaign rallies and riding on a horse named "Sunshine". From Wikipedia.
