Looking across Golden Valley

e're putting together this home page to try and pass on some of the things we've learned and hopefully help other folks who are considering a move to Golden Valley.

We're Benney and Linda and we moved here from Austin, Texas in 1998. We've been driving through here on our way to and from Las Vegas since 1987. We first spent some time in this area in late November/early December of 1997 in an RV park in Arizona State FlagKingman, and we liked what we saw.

After looking at property in and around Kingman, the Dolan Springs area and Golden Valley, we finally bought just over 4 acres (two adjoining 2 acre lots) in Golden Valley. We contracted for a septic tank, electricity, water, telephone service, propane and bought an older double wide mobile home and had it set-up on the property. We started this process in early July 1998 and the final thing (the 'phone) was completed in late October '98. We're now in the process of turning all this into a home.

We love Golden Valley! We live out in the country but decent shopping can be had in Kingman (30 minutes) or Bullhead City (also 30 minutes). We can be in the casinos in Laughlin, NV in 25 minutes from our house or a two hour drive by car will put us in Las Vegas ~ you go over Hoover Dam coming and going: a beautiful drive! Phoenix is about 3 1/2 hours away and Los Angeles is a 6 to 8 hour drive (if you just have to be in a city!). We live in the desert but you'd be amazed at the life here! The desert in the spring is full of flowers. We have a bird feeder (and keep water out for the critters) and we have seen 14 different types of birds at our feeder so far. We've also had a candy-eating coyote in our front yard, a jackrabbit graze all our petunias down to Cactus Wrennubbins and a bat spend the day asleep in our living room!

Disadvantages? Sure. You'll have those no matter where you live. It gets pretty warm here in the summertime. Well,.......to a ex-Texan it gets pretty warm, to most other folks it gets hotter than hell! Temperatures over 100 degrees are usual and over 105 is to be expected. Also, the wind blows and it gets pretty dusty. (Did I mention scorpions, tarantulas, bulldog black ants and every plant that grows has either a thorn or spine on it?) I guess an honest Real Estate Developer would have named this place "The Hot, Dry, Dusty Hell-Hole in the Middle of Nowhere", but somehow that doesn't seem to have quite the same appeal as "Golden Valley". On the other hand, we saw snow just one time this past winter - and it melted as fast as it hit the ground. And even on the hottest days it tends to cool off pretty quickly once the sun goes down. And then there's the unofficial Arizona State Motto (all together now!).....

"....but it's a dry heat!"
